What to do when someone has just died

The steps are slightly different depending on where the death occurs. In all cases, you can call us and we’ll guide you through this.

  1. Contact the person’s doctor or after-hours medical service.
  2. Once the death has been confirmed, call us at 06 345 5522 .
  3. We’ll arrange a time to bring your loved one into our care and talk with you about next steps.

  1. Staff will support you with immediate care and paperwork.
  2. You can ask them to contact us, or phone us directly when you feel ready.
  3. We’ll liaise with the hospital or care facility team and arrange a time to bring your loved one into our care at a time that is best for you and them.

If the death was sudden, accidental or unexpected, the Coroner may be involved. This can feel overwhelming, but we’re here to support you.

  1. Let the Police know we are your prefered funeral home, they will explain what happens next.
  2. You will need to contact us so we can notify the coroner or doctor.
  3. Call us at any stage for guidance and support.
  4. Once the Coroner’s process is complete, we’ll work with you to arrange the funeral.

What we’ll talk about first

Our first conversations are usually quite simple. We’ll move at your pace.

  • Your immediate needs, and your questions.
  • Burial or cremation.
  • Any cultural or faith considerations that are important to you.
  • Next steps and a time to meet in person.
You don’t need to have all the answers before you call us.

What to expect when we meet

An arrangement meeting usually takes 60–90 minutes and can be held at our premises or in your home if that’s easier.
We’ll talk through the person’s story, your ideas and the practical details.

  • Family and whakapapa information
Details for the death registration (date/place of birth, parents’ names, etc.).
  • Planning the service
Location, date and time, who will lead the service, and any readings or music.
  • Casket and flowers
We’ll show you options and help you choose something that feels right for your family.
  • Notices and livestream
Funeral notices, online tributes, and livestream options for those who can’t attend.
  • Costs and payment
We’ll outline likely costs in clear language and talk about payment options.

What can be helpful to bring

Don’t worry if you can’t find everything straight away.

  • Any existing funeral plans or wishes (written or discussed).
  • Clothing for your loved one.
  • Birth and marriage certificates to help with the death registration.
  • Photos or mementos you may wish to use for the service or memorial book.
Not everything has to be done at once, we can step you through it.
