My condolences to Max’s family who will miss him terribly, I’m sure. It’s been many decades since I last saw Max but I fondly remember him, and his Labrador, Ace, from my childhood in the 1970s. The Cawston family lived on the corner of Bombay Street and Delhi Avenue in a big art deco house with an even bigger shed. Lorna, Max’s Mum and “Cawstie” to us, was often at our place in Madras Street for a chat so my early childhood was full of stories about what Bob, Bob Jnr and Max were up to, and about the holidays at the family’s Taupo bach. My little sister, Tanya, and I would frequently pop over to Cawstie’s and try to be as charming as possible in the hope of being given a homemade biscuit from Cawstie’s always full biscuit tin. It usually worked. Max, as a young man, would also pop around for a chat with my Mum and Dad of an evening or a weekend and we’d need to protect our Mr Whippy icecreams from Ace. He got my little sister’s once. I think it was a Ford Capri that Max had - it was the coolest car I’d ever seen at that point. I can still remember Max’s distinctive voice. He was always lovely to us. It saddens me that he’s gone, but I hope that he’s having a good old catch-up with his parents and brother in heaven.

Rest peacefully Max. I always enjoyed our chats and your humour while working at the hospital. You will be missed.

Our heartfelt sympathy to you both. Will miss the odd chats and the catch up in Taupo when he was at the batch. Thinking of you
